Harrison Central School District Hires New Director Of Athletics

HARRISON, N. Y. -- Harrison Central School District's new director of physical education, health and athletics is bringing years of experience as a New York City gym teacher, coach and athletic director to Harrison schools.

Chris Galano, who served as athletic director at Stuyvesant High School in New York City for three years, started Thursday in Harrison. School district officials noted his work at Stuyvesant included coordinating 42 athletic teams and supporting 1,200 student athletes in a school of 3,400 while increasing student participation in athletics.

Also at Stuyvesant, he oversaw student eligibility, coaching recruitment and development, facility use and athletic department budgeting. He also taught physical education and coordinated an intrmural sports program.

Prior to that, he taught physical education and health at Long Island City High School, and elementary physical education and adaptive physical education for students with disabilities at the William Wordsworth School in Queens.

Galano’s experience in athletics includes serving as the varsity lacrosse coach and assistant varsity football coach at Long Island City High School, as well as the assistant varsity basketball coach and assistant varsity football coach at North Shore High School on Long Island.

Galano earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education with a concentration in adaptive physical education from SUNY Cortland, school officials said. He also holds a master’s degree in coaching athletics from Stony Brook University, and he completed graduate coursework in leadership toward administrative certification at the College of Saint Rose.
