With schools gearing up to open their doors to students, officials issued an alert, reminding parents that the district’s youngest students are required to be accompanied at a bus stop, when both dropping off or picking up.
School officials noted that on the return home, any of those students who are not met at the bus stop by a parent or guardian will be returned to school, with the bus company alerting the family when this happens.
Parents or guardians who cannot accompany their child to and from the bus stop must designate someone in writing to take their place. That person must have photo identification to show the bus driver before the child will be released. A designation form can be found online.
When a student is returned to a school, the parent can verbally designate someone to pick them up, but that person must still show photo identification before the child is released.
"We don't mean to create more headaches for busy families, but the safety of our students is always paramount," Director of Transportation William Miller said. "With our youngest children, that requires extra vigilance. This policy will ensure that students in our earliest grades are never unattended on their journey to school or back home.”
"We appreciate the parents of our youngest students partnering with us on this policy," Schools Superintendent Brian Osborne added. "We are confident that everyone will want to play his or her part to see that we all enjoy a safe, productive school year."
