NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- A striking glass tower that houses lounges on every floor is a striking feature of a new dormitory for 300-plus students at Iona College in New Rochelle.

The top floor boasts views of the Long Island Sound, New Rochelle and the college campus.

It feels like living in an like an upscale city apartment. Better still, students say, it's like living in a hotel.

Builder E.W. Howell, faculty, students, college and elected officials celebrated the grand opening recently of North Avenue Residence Hall.

Located at 715 North Ave., it is a seven-story, 100,000-square-foot residence hall and has nearly 7,000 square feet of retail space on the ground level.

The upper six floors include accommodations for 310 students in suite-style apartments with no more than four students per suite.

The dorm provides apartment-style living, including living rooms and cooking/laundry facilities, as well as common areas to meet the needs of upperclassmen.

The project was designed by Studio Hillier Architects and was completed on budget and in time for the new academic year in August, according to a news release.

More than 300 students have moved into the new residence hall, which features two- and four-bedroom air-conditioned suites equipped with LED lighting and high-speed internet.

College President Joseph E. Nyre said reviews so far have been "great, with students commenting the new residence hall has the 'vibe of an upscale apartment in the city' and is 'like living in a really nice hotel.'

“Iona College is working hard to be a good neighbor to our good neighbors," Nyre said.

“This new residence hall is a groundbreaking development on North Avenue for both Iona College and the city of New Rochelle. We celebrate our partnership with New Rochelle, in the spirit of positive town-gown relationships – working together to move our corner of the world.”

“Throughout our 125-year history, we have developed a deep understanding of the complex environment of the education sector, whether it’s public, private, higher education or specialty, the challenges of building within each area are unique and need to be dealt with effectively,” said Jack Hagen, vice president of E.W. Howell’s Education Construction Division.
