Yonkers Mother Tosses Twins To Safety In 'Suspicious' Blaze

YONKERS, N.Y. -- An apartment fire being considered 'suspicious' by authorities led a Yonkers mother to throw her 3-year-old twins out of the window to a relative, fire officials said.

The babies were not injured. However, their 13-year-old sister, who jumped out of the second story window, sustained head trauma and severe lower extremity trauma, potentially breaking both of her legs, according to fire officials.

The smoky fire occurred at 7 Van Cortland Park Ave. at 2:05 a.m., and prompted the four tenants in the building to jump from the window.

According to officials, the mother and 13-year-old girl were too big for the relative to catch, and jumped out of the building on their own.

The Journal News reported the mother was injured, but not severely. She was taken to Jacobi Medical Center.

Yonkers Assistant Fire Chief Edward Cucolo said the fire is highly suspicious, and officials are on the scene investigating.

He said video camera footage from across the street is currently being evaluated for more clues on how the fire started.

Additionally, samples of the burnt material have been sent to the lab but may take weeks to come back.

Five adults and six children were displaced but no serious building damage occurred.

Officials said there is smoke damage in hallway and in the second floor apartment, along with some broken windows.

The Red Cross relocated everybody because of broken glass and damaged steps, and some repairs will need to be made before residents can move back in.
