NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - In an effort to reduce the bill for taxpayers, the City of New Rochelle and local school district have combined refuse and recycling pickup for all municipal and school locations.

This week, officials announced that the city has assumed refuse and recycling pickup responsibilities at school locations, saving an estimated $75,000 annually.

According to officials, the agreement facilitated the purchase of a new collection truck and freed up employees for other assignments. As a result of the consolidation, the city has managed to cut the refuse collection bill in half.

“Prior to our shared services agreement, the school district provided refuse and recycling services for all of our facilities,” Schools Superintendent Brian Osborne said. “Reassigning these tasks to the City means we can redirect our maintenance staff and efforts to core priorities. We are grateful for this partnership and welcome future endeavors.”

“This small effort will continue to save substantial dollars each and every year,” City Manager Chuck Strome added. “Steps like these will yield great results over time, and are catalysts for further innovations.”

New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson said that he was hopeful of collaborating with the school district to reduce costs for taxpayers in the future.

“Our city government and school district may be independent entities, but we serve the same community and the same taxpayers, so we should seize every opportunity to work together, reduce duplication and save money,” he stated. “That’s the idea behind a new shared services agreement
