David Stern, who was raised in Teaneck and graduated from Teaneck High School, turns 74 on Thursday.
Stern, the former commissioner of the National Basketball Association, was born Sept. 22, 1942, in New York City.
Stern became the fourth commissioner of the NBA on Feb. 1, 1984, the same year as stars such as Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley entered the league.
During the Stern era, the NBA grow into 30 franchises and expand into Canada. He also oversaw the creation of the WNBA.
