NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- An array of events to celebrate Black History Month in New Rochelle are on tap.

The following is the schedule:

  • African Dance Workshop , New Rochelle Library Ossie Davis Theater, Jan. 30 to Feb. 27, 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Free for kids, ages 7 and up and their parents. A performance is set for Feb. 27 at 2 p.m.
  • Author visit/ David Bank, "Soar: How Boys Learn, Succeed and Develop Character" for male students, New Rochelle High School, Linda E. Kelly Theater, Feb. 4, 6 to 8 p.m.
  • College Resource Night, New Rochelle High School, House 4 Cafeteria, Feb. 4, 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Strayhorn: An Illustrated Life: Feb. 8 to 29, New Rochelle Library. Exhibit of photographs, artifacts, art work and personal items traces the career of musician Billy Strayhorn.
  • Capoeira Presentation & Panel Discussion: Quién eres tu? : A Shared History in the Americas, focusing on the impact of slavery, New Rochelle High School, Linda E. Kelley Theater, Feb. 11, 5 to 7 p.m.
  • Alvin Ailey Dance Camp , New Rochelle High School House, 4 Dance Studio, Feb. 16 to 20, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration fee is $50. The camp is high school students. Performance is Feb. 20, Whitney Young Auditorium, 2:30 to 3:30 pm. Registration forms at House 2 and House 4 offices or calll (914) 576-4500 or (914)712-8128.
  • "Billy Strayhorn: Lush Life" screening and reception, New Rochelle Library, Ossie Davis Theater, Feb. 21, 4 to 5:30 p.m. Music by Glenda Davenport and the Hiroshi Yamazaki Trio, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Free and open to public.
  • Black History Community Celebration, New Rochelle High School, Whitney Young Auditorium, Feb. 27, 4 to 8 p.m. All are invited. Art exhibit, arts and crafts and food vendors, author signings and cultural performances. Bokandeye African Dance and Drum Troupe at 5 p.m. Admission is $5, $3 for students.
