The blaze began at around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, when a bus fire was reported along the parkway in Pelham, according to the Village of Pelham Fire Department.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the bus’s engine compartment fully engulfed in flames, with the fire quickly spreading into the passenger area.

Firefighters, including members of the Mount Vernon Fire Department, soon set up a water supply from a nearby road and stretched a hose line on the parkway to battle the flames. A New York State DOT truck and Westchester County Police also responded to help with traffic control and road closures.

Fortunately, the bus driver was able to evacuate safely, and there were no passengers on board at the time of the fire, firefighters said.

The fire department noted that incidents like this pose unique challenges on the Hutchinson River Parkway, where limited water supply and dry roadside vegetation can create dangerous conditions.
