A woman was injured after being hit in the head with a hammer during what police are calling a targeted burglary in East Shoreham, police said.

The incident took place around 3 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 31, at an occupied home on Suffolk Down, said Suffolk County Police.

According to detectives, three men, one armed with what appeared to be a handgun, entered the home and confronted a man and woman who live in a rear bedroom, police said.

The suspects attempted to steal a safe but dropped it as they fled the home.

During the burglary, the woman was struck in the head with a hammer by one of the suspects, police said.

She was treated and released at a local hospital.

Detectives believe the burglary was targeted.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
