It happened on Saturday, Aug. 17 just before 5 a.m.
The male victim, 81, was walking in the rear of 164 Rockaway Avenue when he was attacked from behind, Nassau County Police said.
The subject, described as a male Hispanic, punched the victim multiple times, causing him to fall to the ground.
The subject then removed a cell phone and wallet from the victim and fled on foot westbound on West Valley Stream Boulevard.
The victim suffered substantial pain to his face, arms and chest area, police said. He received medical treatment at the scene.
No further description of the subject has been released.
The investigation is ongoing.
