A motorist is facing charges after fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run crash in which a pedestrian was seriously injured, police said.

The crash happened just after 5 p.m. on Friday, July 12 in Levittown.

According to detectives, a male pedestrian, 35, while attempting to cross north on Hempstead Turnpike, was struck by a black Dodge Ram pickup truck traveling eastbound.

The operator of the vehicle, John Roberts, 39, stopped briefly to assist the victim and then fled the scene, police said.

After a long period of time, Roberts returned to the scene where he was placed under arrest, according to police.

The victim suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he is in critical but stable condition, police said.

 The investigation is ongoing.

Roberts was charged with leaving the scene of an auto accident with a serious physical injury. He will be arraigned on Saturday, July 13 in First District Court in Hempstead.
