The house fire started around 5:38 a.m., Thursday, May 6 on Washington Street in Garden City, said Nassau County Assistant Chief Fire Marshal Michael F. Uttaro.

When firefighters arrived on the scene they found a heavy blaze coming from the home, Uttaro said.

"Multiple fatalities were found in the home," he said.

Uttaro said he could not put an exact number of the fatalities due to the fire and the overhaul taking place.

Firefighters from more than a dozen fire departments battled the blaze for more than two hours to bring it under control, he added.

One police officer was overcome with smoke inhalation, but is expected to be okay, Uttaro said.

In addition, numerous firefighters were injured, but did not require hospitalizations, he said.

None of the victims have been identified at this time.

The fire is under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office.

This is the first time in memory that all of the county's fire departments were called to fires at one time as more than 50 departments worked a large fire at Jamaica Ash and Rubble Removal in Westbury.

That fire, which still burning, has disrupted service to the Long Island Railroad.
