Man, Woman Nabbed For Burglarizing School In Nassau County, Police Say

Two people were arrested for allegedly burglarizing a school on Long Island.

The Nassau County Police Department said officers responded to California Avenue Elementary School in Uniondale after an alarm was set off around 11:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8.

The school is located at 236 California Ave.

NCPD said officers located 32-year-old Avery Merchant, who police said is homeless, and 36-year-old Kelley Carbery, of Syosset, in a closet of one of the classrooms.

The two were arrested without incident, police said.

NCPD said Merchant is charged with the following:

  • Third-degree burglary
  • Third-degree attempted grand larceny
  • Seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance

Carbery is charged with third-degree burglary and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, police said.

NCPD said both defendants were due to be arraigned on Thursday, Sept. 9.
