Man Hits Officer With Van After Attempting To Break Into Westbury Gas Station, Police Say

A 38-year-old man is accused of striking an officer with a van after attempting to break through the glass doors of a Long Island gas station.

Patrick Kelly, of Forest Hills, Queens, was arrested in Westbury at 2:15 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 29, the Nassau County Police Department reported.

NCPD said officers saw Kelly using an unknown object to shatter the glass doors of the Speedway Gas Station, located at 800 Jericho Turnpike, and they activated emergency lights and sirens.

Kelly then got into his 1995 Ford Econoline van, and an officer approached his passenger door and told him to stop, police reported.

Authorities said Kelly accelerated, striking the officer and crashing into an occupied Radio Motor Patrol vehicle.

The officer suffered minor pain in the incident, police said.

NCPD said Kelly was arrested and charged with:

  • Two counts of second-degree assault
  • One count of third-degree burglary 
  • One count of second-degree criminal mischief
  • Multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law violations
