Long Island Teen Caught In Act Burglarizing Home, Police Say

A 19-year-old from Riverhead was apprehended by officers while he was committing a home burglary in Southampton, police said.

It happened around 9:15 p.m. on Friday, July 19.

The Southampton Town Police Department had received a call for an act of vandalism in progress at a residence in the North Sea Beach Colony. 

Responding officers arrived and found a residence with damage to nearly every exterior window as well as significant damage inside the unoccupied dwelling, according to police.

As officers were conducting their on-scene preliminary investigation, they located the perpetrator in a neighboring house. 

The response team, which consisted of members of the Southampton Town Police Department’s Patrol Division and also included the Southampton Village Police Department’s canine officer, checked the adjacent residence and interrupted a burglary that was occurring in progress, according to police.

The suspect, subsequently identified as Edin G.Vargas, physically resisted arrest before officers were able to take him into custody without further incident, police said.

Vargas was charged with:

  • two counts of burglary in the second degree, both Class .C felonies, 
  • one count of criminal mischief in the second degree, a Class D felony, 
  • and resisting arrest, a Class A misdemeanor. 

He was transported to police headquarters where he was processed and held for arraignment.
