It's A Girl: Mom Gives Birth On Long Island Highway

While most expectant mothers give birth in a hospital, that was not the case for Long Island mom Diana Suarez, whose bundle of joy couldn’t quite wait that long.

Emergency crews in Holbrook were called at around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, with reports that a woman was going into labor on the shoulder of Sunrise Highway near the Lincoln Avenue exit, according to Suffolk County Police.

By the time Suffolk County Highway Patrol Officer Jesse Wenk arrived on scene, the 26-year-old Suarez, of North Bellport, had already delivered a baby girl.

Wenk helped keep the newborn warm with a jacket and ensured the child’s vitals were stable until medics with the Holbrook Fire Department arrived and took over, police said.

Both mom and baby were taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for evaluation. Police said both are doing well.
