ID Released For Man Seriously Injured In Crash That Caused LIE Closure

The identity has been released for the Long Island man who was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash that closed westbound lanes on the Long Island Expressway for several hours in Hauppauge.

The man, now ID'd as Jesse Kowalewski, 38, of Medford, was driving a 1996 Toyota 4Runner near exit 56, around 10:20 a.m., Monday, Feb. 24, when he swerved to avoid striking a vehicle that had slowed for construction, according to the Suffolk County Police.

Kowalewski's 4Runner overturned, ejecting him.

He was transported via helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. 

The lanes reopened around 1:45 p.m. following the accident investigation.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
