ID Released For Man Killed In Two-Vehicle Long Island Crash

A Long Island man who was killed in a two-vehicle crash has been identified.

It happened on Friday, Feb. 28 at approximately 9:45 p.m. in North Bellport, Suffolk County Police said.

Henry Dittmer, 77, of Bay Shore, was driving a 2017 Lincoln sedan eastbound on eastbound Sunrise Highway (Route 27), west of Exit 55, in North Bellport when the vehicle was struck from behind by a 2017 GMC Sierra at approximately 9:45 p.m., police said.

The Lincoln veered off the roadway into the center median and struck the divider, police said. The GMC continued eastbound for approximately 100 feet and crashed into a concrete pillar under the Sills Road overpass, according to police.

The driver of the GMC, now identified as Paul Freiler, 50, of Shirley, was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue where he was pronounced dead. 

Dittmer was transported to the same hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.
