While responding to an unrelated call, Suffolk County Marine Bureau officers spotted an emergency flare go off at approximately 8:20 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 3 in the Great South Bay off Fire Island Pines.

Police said that at the time the flare went off, there was a storm squall approaching, bringing lightning and wind gusts of up to 30 mph, putting the boaters in added danger.

The officers were able to locate the disabled 26-foot Wellcraft back to Timber Point before the storm struck, and all five boaters were uninjured.
