A Long Island man was driving drunk with a child in his pickup truck when he was pulled over for failing to stay in his lane, police say.

Wesley Charles 40, of Bay Shore, was driving a 1998 Dodge pickup eastbound on Sunrise Highway near Exit 55 in North Patchogue when a Highway Patrol officer observed the vehicle failing to maintain a lane and initiated a traffic stop at approximately 9:25 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, Suffolk County Police said.

There were three passengers in the Dodge, including a 9-year-old boy.

Charles was arrested and charged with:

  • aggravated driving while intoxicated,
  • aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger 15 years old or younger (Leandra’s Law),
  • endangering the welfare of a child.

He was held overnight at the Fifth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday, Dec. 15.

The 9-year-old was released to the custody of his mother at the Fifth Precinct.
