Brazen Robbery: Woman Attacks Long Island Store Clerk, Police Say

A 35-year-old woman was charged after police said she attacked a store clerk on Long Island while committing a robbery.

Police received a report about the incident in Riverhead at about 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, the Southampton Town Police Department reported.

Officers responded to the 76 Gas Station, located at 7 Peconic Ave., and found that a woman attacked the clerk when he confronted her for stealing merchandise, police said.

She allegedly slapped him and kicked him before grabbing New York State Lotto scratch-off tickets and fleeing the area, according to the report. 

The clerk was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, authorities said. 

Police said the suspect was identified as Janelle Edwards, of Mastic, and she was arrested at the Riverhead Train Station.

Authorities said Edwards was charged with:

  • Second-degree robbery
  • Third-degree assault
  • Petit larceny
