Musician Robert Lopez, Long Island Native, Dies Suddenly At 40

A well-known musician from Westchester who grew up on Long Island, Robert  L. Lopez, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Aug. 22, at age 40.

He was born on Aug. 22, 1979, in Port Jefferson. He was a New Rochelle resident and was "a dedicated and loyal employee for the local Shoprite," the obituary said.

Lopez was a passionate Yankees fan and had a love for music. He composed his own lyrics, enjoyed singing his songs and playing his guitar. He performed regularly at clubs in New York City.

"He was always known as someone with a sensitive heart, meeting challenges, and dedicated to his immediate family. He was a learner of many things, but more importantly a teacher of many things regarding the heart," said the obituary.

Lopez is survived by his mother, Dr. Estrella Lopez-Sweetser; step-father, Elliot Sweetser; brother, Daniel L. Lopez; Sister-in-Law, Jackie Lopez; Nephew, Mateo L. Lopez, and his aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jose L. Lopez; uncle, Vincent “Billy” Lopez; grandparents, Lillian and Julio Lopez and Rosario Sanchez and Francisco Rodriguez.

A celebration of Lopez's life will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28 at the Edwards-Dowdle Funeral home, 64 Ashford Ave. in Dobbs Ferry, with a service at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the organization “Autism Speaks” as a memorial gift or to the charity of your choice in Lopez' name.
