Duane Costa, age 40, of Uniondale, was sentenced on Thursday, Jan. 27, to 25 years to life in prison in the 2018 incident, according to Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly.
He was convicted of four counts of first-degree attempted murder, one count of first-degree criminal use of a firearm and three counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon on Thursday, Dec. 16, Donnelly said.
The DA's Office said Costa attempted to murder four Nassau County Police officers.
Costa was a passenger in a car that two NCPD officers pulled over at about 12:45 a.m. on Oct. 28, 2018.
The car was pulled over at Midwood Street and Lafayette Avenue in Hempstead for failing to signal a left turn, the DA's Office said.
After officers smelled alcohol and saw that Costa was not wearing a seatbelt, and was adjusting an object in his waistband, officers ordered the driver and Costa to exit the car, Donnelly said.
Costa reportedly pushed past the officers and ran away.
While Costa was reaching toward his waistband, a .40 caliber pistol fell to the ground, the DA's Office reported.
He then pulled out a CZ-52 pistol and fired rounds at the officers as he ran around a corner, according to the report.
He encountered two more officers, who were there for a separate matter, and fired rounds at them, Donnelly said.
Costa was located and arrested a short time later.
None of the officers were injured during the incident, the DA's Office said.
