The shark was sighted in shallow waters in the Hamptons, prompting a response by police.
The shark, of an unknown species, was 10 to 12 feet in length, said Christopher Isola, the Village of Quogue's Chief of Police. It was spotted in Quogue just after 9 a.m. Saturday, July 20 near Penniman Creek, which feeds Shinnecock Bay and Quogue Canal, Isola said. (See image above.)
Shark sightings are not rare for Long Island, but it is unusual to see one near a creek.
Isola said the Quogue Police Department has been working with Southampton Town Bay constables who are monitoring the shark with marine vessels. The Southampton Police Department has also been involved, attempting to monitor the shark with an unmanned aircraft system.
Earlier this month, a fisherman in Riverhead posted a video of what he believes was a shark that has since gone viral on social media.
A year ago, in mid-July 2018, two children were bitten on the leg by a shark on Fire Island in the waters off Sailors Haven and Atlantique beaches.
