A Medford man was seriously injured during a single-vehicle crash that closed westbound lanes on the Long Island Expressway for several hours in Hauppauge.

According to the Suffolk County Police, the man was driving a 1996 Toyota 4Runner on the westbound Long Island Expressway, near exit 56, around 10:20 a.m., Monday, Feb. 24, when he swerved to avoid striking a vehicle that had slowed for construction.

The vehicle overturned, ejecting the driver, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, police said.

The man was transported via helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check.

The lanes reopened around 1:45 p.m. following the accident investigation.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
