The Central Islip School District issued an alert to parents this week advising that at approximately 2 p.m on Monday, April 5, a female student was walking on Vanderbilt Avenue near Oakland Avenue when a man with brown skin walked towards her, though she was unaware.
Officials said that a passing driver noticed the man had his private parts exposed, prompting him to stop and confront the suspect, who fled the area on foot.
School officials said that the girl did not know of the potential danger she was in, as she had her earbuds in and wasn’t aware he was exposing himself at the time he was confronted.
The man was described as being Black or Hispanic, between the ages of 35 and 40, and approximately 6-feet tall. At the time of the incident, the suspect was wearing a red jacket and red pants.
A report has been filed with the Suffolk County Police Department, but no suspect has been apprehended.
“Please review this incident with your children and review stranger/safety issues with them in order to help ensure their safety at all times,” Central Islip Director of School Safety Thomas Weiner said."Encourage them not to walk alone on the streets and be watchful for strangers, especially those who match the above description.”
