Sammie Darby, age 22, admitted to the second-degree attempted murder charge for the incident that happened in Bay Shore in November of last year, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney announced on Thursday, Nov. 17.

Darby, a resident of Bay Shore, went to the victim's apartment complex on Nov. 30, 2021, and found her in the parking lot with another man, Tierney said.

After an argument, he pulled out a 9 mm handgun and fired a round into her chest at point-blank range, the DA's Office reported.

He then pulled the victim into his car, which was driven by a friend, and took her to the hospital, where he left her at the check-in area, Tierney reported.

She received life-saving treatment for her injuries, according to the DA's Office.

“This defendant used an illegal handgun to shoot and nearly kill his ex-girlfriend in a jealous rage,” Tierney said. “At a time where domestic and gun violence are so prevalent, this defendant’s plea sends a clear message that Suffolk County will tolerate neither.”

Tierney said Darby is expected to be sentenced on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
