During a press conference on Wednesday, Feb. 26, health and government officials said there are no confirmed cases of the virus in Nassau County.

However, there are 83 people who are "self-isolating" as requested by the Nassau County Health Department due to visiting mainland China within the past 14 days, said Health Commissioner Dr. Larry Eisenstein.

Suffolk County is reportedly currently monitoring 29 people for the virus.

There are no mandatory quarantine cases in either county.

Local officials are alerted each day by government officials of any person arriving by plane that has been to China. That person is then contacted and interviewed by health department employees.

The person, if found to have been in mainland China within 14 days, is asked to self-isolate and not have contact with the public. The health department employee then contacts them each day to check their temperature or for any symptoms such as a cough or respiratory issues.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said the county's health department is in constant contact with state and federal agencies to monitor the spread of the virus.

They are also working closely with all 11 Nassau County hospitals, each of which has isolation rooms if needed.

Eisenstein said so far all people contacted have cooperated. But there are plans in place for a mandatory quarantine if need.

He added, that with flu season in full swing, in addition to worries about the coronavirus, the best protection residents can take is wash hands frequently.
