Occupy Wall Street Polarizes Mt. Kisco, Nation

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. – A movement once contained to Wall Street has traveled up to Westchester County recently. Occupy Wall Street has sparked similar protests in many major cities throughout the United States and around the world, however, people in Mt. Kisco have mixed reactions to the protests.

Several local residents who work on Wall Street have been affected by the protests and other residents have gone to Manhattan to show their support.

Richard Brooks, a Mt. Kisco resident, joined Wall Street protesters with his wife last weekend.

“It’s a young movement,” Brooks said, adding that although he thinks protesters are “undefined” they “have promise.”

In Mt. Kisco, a group of protesters associated with the activist organization, MoveOn, met in front of Applebee's on Saturday to support the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Local resident, Bob Bogen, said he believes American protesters represent people around the world who oppose “the current self-destruction of the U.S.” He said he thinks the executives “feel they have a right to be paid by the government to export our industry and many millions of our jobs as well as support grotesque wars instead of stopping terrorism and poverty that adds to it.”

Denise Bednarczyk is one Mt. Kisco resident who opposes the movement.

“I worked for a corporate giant, PepsiCo, for 10 years and I always thought the executives I supported deserved more money,” Bednarczyk. “People protesting on Wall Street should automatically forfeit their benefits, medical, food stamps, and unemployment.”

Bednarczyk continued, addressing the protesters, “Look for a job instead of protesting. You're protesting the very things you use every day, iPhones, Nike, Motorola, Facebook, Twitter. It’s not up to you to decide what CEOs get paid. It's up to you to provide for your family.”
