With a turnout projected to exceed 400,000 people, the movement — led by the progressive group Indivisible — reflects one of the largest coordinated protest efforts in recent memory.
The protests are being organized in partnership with nearly 200 advocacy organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, League of Women Voters, and Planned Parenthood Action Fund, along with groups championing climate justice and voting rights.
The movement’s website, handsoff2025.com, issued a pointed statement:
“Donald Trump and Elon Musk think this country belongs to them. They’re taking everything they can get their hands on, and daring the world to stop them. On April 5, we’re taking to the streets nationwide to fight back with a clear message: Hands off!”
Demonstrators plan to gather at state capitals, federal buildings, and city centers —anywhere, they say, that they can amplify their message.
A rally on the National Mall in Washington, DC, is expected to draw more than 12,000 people, with confirmed speakers including Democratic Congressmen Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Maxwell Frost of Florida.
According to the advocacy group MoveOn, the event will mark the “largest single day of action” since the start of Trump’s second term.
Protesters are rallying around three main demands:
- An end to what they call the “billionaire takeover and rampant corruption” within the administration.
- A halt to proposed cuts to federal programs like Social Security and Medicare.
- A stop to the ongoing targeting of marginalized groups, including immigrants and transgender people.
