The body was found on Thursday, March 6, shortly before 10 a.m., when police found an unresponsive woman along the parkway in Yonkers, according to the New York City Police Department.
EMS crews declared the woman dead, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is now determining her cause of death, the NYPD said, adding that she had gone missing from 2200 Morris Ave. in the Bronx.
Although police have not yet confirmed the woman's identity, the family of Pamela Alcantara, 26, strongly believes that the body is hers, ABC7 reported.
The body was found stuffed in a red suitcase, according to the outlet, which also reported that Alcantara's ex-boyfriend is now in custody. However, police have not charged anyone yet.
Her family had been searching for Alcantara for days and now believe her ex-boyfriend is behind her death, as she had been planning on moving out of their shared apartment, according to ABC7.
NBC New York reported that Alcantara had last been in contact with her mother on Sunday, March 2 as she was returning home from a church event. She never made it to another planned event in Connecticut, the outlet said.
The investigation remains ongoing, police said.

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been started to help raise money for Alcantara's family to help them take her body back to the Dominican Republic.
"We ask for your donation with the assistance of the burial and transference of Pamela Alcántara Rubiera to the Dominican Republic to be next to her younger sister. We appreciate any collaboration," the organizer wrote.
As of Friday, March 7, the effort had collected $1,350 in donations out of a $16,000 goal.
