The shooting happened in Brentwood, at a residence near Wurz Street and Zane Court, shortly before 1 p.m. Friday, April 4.

Suffolk County Police responding to the home for a welfare check were initially greeted by the suspect’s wife, who opened the front door and let the officers in, police said. Inside, they encountered Bruce Boyd holding a knife and drenched in blood from two self-inflicted wounds, according to police.

"The officers retreat the length of the front lawn, all while yelling at Mr. Boyd to drop the knife,” Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina told reporters.

Boyd charged at the officers, and at least one officer opened fire, striking the 54-year-old, according to police. Officers administered CPR, but he was pronounced dead at South Shore University Hospital.

No officers were injured in the ordeal, Catalina said.

Boyd was a retired New York City Department of Corrections officer who worked at Rikers Island, according to Suffolk County officials. He was honored at a retirement ceremony in July 2020.
