Raining In The New Year: Times Square Ball Drop Will Be A Wet One For First Time In Decades

Ready to ring in the new year? Then you should also be ready for rain.

For the first time since 1995, rain is expected to be falling when the ball drops in Times Square. (For a look at the projected radar for midnight, Tuesday, Jan. 1, see the image above.)

Rain will overspread the region in the afternoon on New Year's Eve day, Monday, Dec. 31, starting around 3 p.m. and continuing into early Tuesday morning.

Total rainfall amounts will be between 1 and 1.5 inches.

There is some good news.

After record cold last year on New Year's Eve, it will be much milder this time around.

Monday's daytime high will be in the mid-40s, but the temperature will climb during the evening, and should be around 50 degrees in midtown Manhattan when the ball comes down.

The rain will finally taper off around 4 a.m. Tuesday.

New Year's Day will be mostly sunny and mild, with a high in the low-50s and gusty winds.
