Mount Vernon Schools Seek Teachers, Administrators

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – After a mass exodus saw 58 teachers and seven administrators retire from the Mount Vernon school district, interim Schools Superintendent Judith Johnson and the Board of Education is looking to fill those vacancies.

In an effort to cut costs before the second and final vote on the school budget, the district offered a $35,000 retirement package to the most experienced teachers, who had the highest pay checks.

With those jobs opening up, the district has started reaching out to prospective candidates to fill them. Currently, the district needs middle and elementary school principals as well as a physical education teacher and early childhood literacy specialists.

The district is being aided in the search by the Putnam and Northern Westchester BOCES. All online applications must be submitted by June 30.
