MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – After years of delays, Mount Vernon officials have finally broken ground on the downtown LaPorte mixed-use development on Gramatan Avenue that will bring hundreds of jobs to the city.

The $60 million development, which is scheduled to be completed by the fall of next year, will feature 159 units for rent, 19,500-square feet of retail space and a municipal parking garage. According to Mount Vernon Mayor Ernest Davis, the project will create more than 300 construction jobs locally.

In addition to the massive structure, developers have also promised a $3 million rehabilitation and refurbishing of the Sydney Avenue garage.

The project has been in the works for more than five years, but developers have had difficulty locking down funds from certain parties. This is the first phase of the city’s master plan that is designed to revitalize downtown Mount Vernon.

Once completed, the LaPorte development will feature hardwood floors in its residences, energy star appliances, a children’s play area, lounge, computer labs, a rooftop green space and a laundry space.

The bulk of the finances for the party are being covered by federal HOME and CDBG funds, Davis noted.

“This has been a long time coming, and everyone is excited about the opportunities that this project will usher into the city,” he said about the project. “The development will serve as a gateway to a revitalized Mount Vernon downtown and is the first phase of development in the master plan to revitalize the area around Hartley Park.”
