Karen Chavez-Euceda, age 36, of Stamford, was arrested on Saturday, Feb. 20, for the incident which took place on Saturday, June 13, said Sgt. Jeffrey Booth, of the Stamford Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad.
According to Booth, Stamford Police responded to a report of a vehicle crash in which a 2005 Nissan Altima was driving inside Cummings Park at a high rate of speed before crashing into a stone wall as Chavez-Euceda tried to negotiate a curve in the roadway.
When patrol officers arrived, they found the vehicle, but no operator or any other occupants of the vehicle.
A short time later, officers responded to 293 Fairfield Ave. on the report of a woman who had been injured in a motor vehicle crash. Upon investigating, it was determined that the woman, Chavez-Euceda, was the operator of the Nissan that had crashed inside Cummings Park, Booth said.
She was transported to Stamford Hospital, he added.
Stamford Police CARS was notified a few days later that the Chavez-Euceda had given birth to a stillborn baby that was deemed to have been killed in the collision, Booth added.
Officers obtained search warrants for the results of toxicological tests performed on Chavez-Euceda’s blood on the night she was brought into Stamford Hospital, and it was determined that her blood alcohol content was .27% more than three times the legal limit, he said.
Chavez-Euceda initially denied being the operator of the vehicle and indicated someone else was driving, but the investigation showed that she was the sole occupant and operator of the vehicle at the time of the crash.
"Upon discussing the case with prosecutors from the Stamford State’s Attorney’s Office, it was found that there is state case law that would not allow them to prosecute Chavez-Euceda for anything involving the death of the fetus," Booth said.
Chavez-Euceda was charged with:
- Operating Under the Influence
- Evading responsibility,
- Interfering with police
- Failure to maintain lane
Chavez-Euceda was released after posting a $5,000 court set bond.
