MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Mount Vernon residents traveling down Fifth Avenue encountered a harrowing sight, a dead man hanging outside of an apartment building.
Police confirmed that Azariah Kerr, 74, of Mount Vernon was recovered from the South Fifth Avenue senior housing facility shortly after 7 a.m. on Thursday. It appears he leaped from a fourth story window with a nylon rope around his neck.
Kerr’s death was ruled a suicide.
“Nothing is that bad that you need to take your own life,” Mount Vernon resident James Hunter said outside of Macedonia Towers after the body was recovered. “It’s a very public thing to do. It’s unsettling.”
According to reports, Kerr, a popular figure in his neighborhood, was having financial problems.
