Williams will start at MSNBC on Sept. 22, the first day of the pope's visit.
He served a six-month suspension without pay at the network after admitting on air that he had misrepresented his role in a mission in Iraq in 2003.
He claimed he had been aboard a helicopter that was forced down by a rocket-propelled grenade, which was not true.
He was removed from his post as anchor and managing editor at "NBC Nightly News" and replaced by Lester Holt.
