Bronxville Woman Actively Supports Community Hospital, Schools

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Christine Fitzgibbons realizes Lawrence Hospital Center and the community schools in Bronxville are local treasures. So as a longtime resident, she does her best to actively support both.

Fitzgibbons, who has been affiliated with the hospital and the school foundation for over six years, has been chairman of the Bronxville School Foundation for this past academic year. She is also currently serving as the co-chair for Lawrence Hospital Center’s upcoming 105th anniversary gala on Friday, Nov. 14.

“It’s important to have quality schools and health care in a community,’’ Fitzgibbons said. “Bronxville is fortunate to have both. I see the stewardship of both community assets as my civic duty and have found the work for both institutions to be very rewarding.”

The Lawrence Hospital Center gala, which occurs once every five years, will be held at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of the Emmy Award-winning “The Dr. Oz Show,” will be the special guest. Dr. Oz, who is Vice-Chairman of the Department of Surgery and a Professor of Surgery at Columbia University, also directs the Cardiovascular Institute of Complementary Medicine Program at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

The co-chairs for the event include Fitzgibbons' husband, John, as well as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and his wife, Jane, and Andre and Michael Koester.  Fitzgibbons was also one of the co-chairs for the event when it was held five years ago.

“My husband and I believe in supporting local non-profits that serve our community,’’ Fitzgibbons said. “We’re excited to have the opportunity to work on this event with many other wonderful residents. Coordinating the details between the hospital and the venue has been great fun and we’re looking forward to celebrating all that the hospital has been and will become.”

The gala is particularly exciting this year as Lawrence Hospital Center has planned integration with the New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System. The move will provide an opportunity for Lawrence to enhance its clinical capabilities, expand across the community and ensure its future viability. The gala will also benefit the hospital’s new Surgery and Oncology Pavilion, which is scheduled to open next year.

“The gala is an opportunity for the community to come together and get to know the hospital better,’’ said Fitzgibbons. “Most people only interact with the hospital and its staff when dealing with a health issue. The gala gives the community an opportunity to mingle with and thank the hospital’s dedicated employees in a relaxed, joyful environment.”

Fitzgibbons has been equally involved in the Bronxville School Foundation, which supports public education by engaging the energies of educators, citizens, parents, students and alumni. The Foundation awards grants for projects that strengthen the school curriculum, support training for faculty members, and provide financial assistance for special school facilities and equipment.

This May, the Foundation presented its grant awards to the Board of Education and awarded over $560,000 to support school initiatives. Since inception in 1991, the Bronxville School Foundation has funded nearly 600 grants that total more than $6 million.

“We’re constantly fundraising and working with the administration and faculty to come up with innovative programs and technologies to enhance our schools,’’ Fitzgibbons said.

In 2012, Bronxville High School was ranked 40th among public schools in the nation and second in New York in a report released by Newsweek magazine.

“In a two percent budget cap environment, I am especially grateful that the Foundation has the support of so many school and non-school families. Due to their generosity, the Foundation is well positioned to support the District’s commitment to excellence,’’ Fitzgibbons said.
