The arrest took place on Thursday, April 10, during a targeted enforcement detail in Mount Vernon conducted by New York State Police and Mount Vernon Police, State Police said on Friday, April 11.
According to authorities, officers saw a man engaging in narcotics transactions near Union Avenue. When officers approached, the suspect—identified as Horace Hammonds, of Mount Vernon—fled on foot, prompting a short chase, police said.
He was apprehended without further incident, police said.
Hammonds was allegedly found to have a quantity of illegal drugs and was charged with the following:
- Third- and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance;
- Fifth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance;
- Tampering with physical evidence;
- Resisting arrest;
- Second-degree obstructing governmental administration.
Hammonds is currently being held at the Mount Vernon Police Department, pending arraignment.
