MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - Mount Vernon voters came out in record numbers to easily pass the proposed public library’s near $5 million budget for the upcoming year.

This week, officials in Mount Vernon announced that voters had approved the proposed $4,616,114 spending plan and filled a vacant seat on the library’s Board of Trustees with a longtime city resident.

According to the Library’s Board of Directors, they are “grateful for the support of the city’s residents allowing the library to continue its mission of serving its patrons with new and improved programming and resources.”

"I am so pleased with this year's voting process.  It is the first time ever that the library has been able to present our voting results in such a timely fashion,” Oscar Davis Jr. the President of the Board of Trustees said. “We appreciate the support of our citizens and their confidence and trust in the Library Board, Director and staff of this great institution.”

In addition to passing the budget vote, Tanya Sutherland was voted over two other candidates to fill the vacant seat on the Board of Trustees. She will be sworn in at the annual reorganizational meeting on Wednesday, July 19.

"I am very excited to be the Trustee-Elect," she said in a statement.  "I salute my competitors, whom it was a pleasure to meet. The mere fact that there were three of us seeking the trustee position is a testament to the fact that the library is doing good work, something we should all be thankful for.

“I am grateful to those who voted for me and supporters of the Mount Vernon Public Library generally.  Our library is an invaluable community institution, and I am delighted, indeed honored, to serve on its Board."
