MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- Two years ago in January, Mount Vernon resident Angelo Nobile was inspired to join his local Disaster Action Team of the Metro New York North Chapter of the American Red Cross.
An information technology specialist by day, Nobile is also a disaster responder by night. He assists families when they are impacted by a disaster, most often a fire.
“I am on call two to four times a month. It feels good to be there for people when they really need help, when they are experiencing the trauma of a disaster,” said Nobile. “Having a busy life doesn’t hold me back from this important work. I know that in a few short hours, I can make a huge difference.”
White Plains resident Andrew Sindell, the chapter’s volunteer resources manager, concurs. Now that's its January again and people are cashing in their new year's resolutions, he wants to boost the all-volunteer Disaster Action Teams with new blood.
“Last January alone, our chapter teams responded to over 20 fires,” Sindell said. “It is essential to have a robust workforce to provide relief when disasters arise.”
