MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- The Mount Vernon Public Library Board of Trustees and staff invite all to join in celebrating the life of Prince, one of the greatest musical icons of all time, on Thursday, May 12, from noon until 8 p.m.

Prince Rodgers Nelson, a musician, songwriter and actor influenced countless artists across many musical genres. Prince helped define music in the 1980's and beyond with such chart topping hits as "Purple Rain," "Controversy" and "Little Red Corvette."

"It is such a privilege to have the Mount Vernon Public Library recognize and honor Prince, a true musical genius and multifaceted artist. The library is committed to providing community engagement with great programming like this," said Elaine Braithwaite, assistant director of the Mount Vernon Public Library.

The library will assist users wishing to sign up for a streaming service for library members called Hoopla, host a Prince Trivia contest, a karaoke session, and screenings of Prince's theatrical releases: "Graffiti Bridge;" "Under the Cherry Moon;" and "Purple Rain."

They will also party like it's 1999, dancing to Prince's greatest hits. All are invited and encouraged to wear purple. Light refreshments will be served.

Trustee President, Oscar Davis, Jr. said, "The Mount Vernon Public Library is a beacon of information and popular culture. This event is an opportunity to bring the community together to celebrate the life of Prince, an accomplished artist and musical architect creating a soundtrack for generations."
