According to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, Chuggers in New Rochelle was seized on Tuesday, Jan. 8 for not paying more than $9,000 in back taxes, said James Gazzale, a spokesman with the department.

But the seizure doesn't mean the end of the favorite drinking hole. Gazzale said the state had "seized the property," but the department always works with the owners in hopes of payment of the back taxes.

"We work with them to have them reopen as soon as possible," he added.

The bar was the sight of a shooting during “large altercation” outside the bar early on Dec. 15., 2018, when three shots were fired. New Rochelle Police later arrested Jeffrey Stover, 48, in connection with the incident, charging him with possession of a deadly weapon, reckless endangerment and one count of possession of stolen property.

For now, a large orange sign issued announcing the seizure along with locked doors greets guests.
