The incident took place around 2:20 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9, when the Hempstead Police attempted to stop a white BMW for a violation.

The driver, Kashawn Watts–Bryant, of Uniondale, refused to stop in the vicinity of Sycamore Avenue in Hempstead, Nassau County Police said.

The BMW then fled onto the Southern State Parkway westbound and exited off Corona Avenue, turning east onto Blakeman Drive at which time the BMW struck multiple vehicles, police said.

At one point, Watts–Bryant, placed the car into reverse in the direction of the officer at which time a Hempstead officer fire one round from his weapon striking Watts–Bryant, police said.

One passenger fled the scene on foot at this point and was located a short distance away. The BMW fled the scene and crashed into a street sign on Primrose Place in Valley Stream.

Watts–Bryant and another occupant fled on foot and additional police units from multiple agencies responded and established a perimeter, police said.

He was located in a rear yard on Evergreen Avenue in West Hempstead and placed into police custody. The other occupant was stopped a short distance away from Primrose Place.

Watts–Bryant was transported to a local hospital and treated for a gunshot wound, police said.

During the arrest, he resisted, causing a Nassau County Police Officer to sustain a broken hand. The officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

During a search of the vehicle and Watts-Bryant, officers recovered a bag containing approximately 300 pills believed to be Oxycodone.

He was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and assault.

He will be arraigned when medically practical.

Police did not release information regarding the other two involved.
