William Witcher, of Far Rockaway, Queens, was charged at an area hospital after Nassau County Police responded to a home on Bayview Avenue in Inwood around 3:15 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 13, on the report of a disturbance, police said.

According to detectives, when officers arrived on the scene, they found Witcher standing next to the victim’s vehicle.

After an investigation, it was determined that Witcher had allegedly attempted to force entry into the victim's home.

After failing to gain entry, he went to the victim’s vehicle, according to police.

He then ripped off a piece of his shirt and lit it on fire with a lighter before sticking the lit shirt into the gas filler cap, police said.

As officers attempted to place Witcher into custody he began to actively resist arrest. After a brief struggle, he was taken into custody.

Police said while in custody Witcher continuously made verbal death threats to the officers. He was transported to an area hospital for further evaluation.

Witcher was charged with arson, attempted burglary, making a terroristic threat, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, and aggravated harassment.

He will be arraigned when medically practical.
