New Rochelle residents Ralph and Arlene Simpson, both 74, drove through the guardrail and into the water at Hudson Park in Echo Bay shortly before 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, police said.
A potential medical condition is believed to have caused the crash.
Divers responded to the scene and were able to pull the driver, Ralph Simpson, from the vehicle, unconscious and unresponsive. He was treated by paramedics at the scene and transported to Montefiore Hospital in New Rochelle.
The body of his wife was later found in the vehicle when it was pulled from the water.
"Due to the lack of visibility in the water and the location that the second person was found in the car, this prevented the discovery of the second body during the initial recovery," New Rochelle Police Capt. Cosmo Costa said.
Officials said that the car was spotted driving erratically in the parking lot before crashing and landing in the water. The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information has been asked to contact investigators at the New Rochelle Police Department by calling (914) 654-2220.
