Maximus, a pit bull puppy who appeared in a viral video being picked up and thrown into a storefront gate in Yonkers in late January, has been adopted by a couple after a brief stay in the city's animal shelter, Yonkers officials announced on Thursday, Feb. 23.

The young dog was put up for adoption by the city after his previous owner, Mount Vernon resident Anthoin McPherson, age 29, was charged with a misdemeanor on Wednesday, Jan. 25 for allegedly abusing Maximus.

McPherson was arrested after a video showing him throwing Maximus into a metal storefront in the Yonkers' 4th Precinct was seen by police, who subsequently located him hours later with the help of SPCA of Westchester County’s Humane Law Enforcement Unit. Further investigation into McPherson also revealed security footage of him hitting Maximus with a belt in the stairwell of a building, police said.

After McPherson's arrest, Maximus was then turned over to the SPCA of Westchester, who assessed him for any injuries or sicknesses.

Yonkers officials said that Maximus was adopted by a "loving couple" who live within the city.

"Best Wishes, Maximus! Here’s to a lifetime of toys, treats, and belly rubs!" city officials said in a post on social media celebrating his adoption.

Yonkers officials added that there are 35 dogs and 75 cats remaining in the city's animal shelter that are still hoping to find homes of their own.

Those interested in adopting one of the animals currently at the shelter can visit it at 1000 Ridge Hill Blvd.
