In one of the largest outage events in its history, 95,054 of Con Edison’s 360,045 customers remain without power as the utility company deals with 5,067 outages as of around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5.
NYSEG was also reporting that 28,734 of its 33,278 Westchester customers are reporting outages.
“The storm’s gusting winds shoved trees and branches onto power lines, bringing those lines and other equipment down and leaving 257,000 customers out of power,” according to Con Ed. “The destruction surpassed Hurricane Irene, which caused 204,000 customer outages in August 2011.”
Con Ed's record for storm-related outages is 1.1 million caused by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 and a Nor’easter that struck the next week.
Con Ed said that the company has brought in 220 additional line workers to restore service and has another 100 scheduled to begin work Wednesday.
Including tree trimmers and other workers, the company will have brought in more than 500 additional workers to help with replacing poles, wires, transformers, and other equipment.
In Westchester, the hardest-hit communities included Yonkers (10,757 outages), New Rochelle (8,584), Mount Vernon (6,312), Cortlandt (4,774), New Castle (4,013), and Rye (3,137), according to Con Edison.
NYSEG is reporting more than 5,000 outages in these communities: Somers (8,784), Lewisboro (5,198), Yorktown (5,119), and Bedford (5,113).
