'Coyote-Like Animal' Seen Near School Sparks Police Warning In Hawthorne

Authorities in Westchester are investigating a possible coyote-related incident that happened near an elementary school, prompting safety alerts and increased patrols.

According to a statement from the Mount Pleasant Police Department on Wednesday, April 9, officers responded to an encounter involving a “coyote-like animal” near Hawthorne Elementary School on Tuesday evening, April 8. 

The department did not specify the exact nature of the incident but confirmed that it is under investigation.  

In response, surrounding schools have been notified, and police say they are taking “necessary precautions” to ensure public safety.

Police are urging residents to remain alert and report any sightings of coyotes in the area.

"If you see a coyote in this area, please go to a safe location and contact the Police Department at 914-769-1941," the department said on Wednesday. 

No injuries or direct threats to students or staff have been reported.
